Overnight we had 3 1/2 inches of rain. Both the plants in raised beds and those planted in the ground came through with flying colors. The soil we started with, a heavy orange/red clay, was in bad shape. It was hard to get wet and once wet was a sticky mess. The areas that have been amended over the last 5 years with compost and shredded leaves are full of earthworms, hold water during times of drought and allow the rain to soak in. It’s a transformation that’s a joy to behold. I wanted to show you a few pictures of how the garden looked after the rain and on this first day of May. I hope you enjoy them.
It’s amazing what adding organic matter can do and how quickly the soil responds. Give it a try.

Thank you Elfe. The cabbage moths have laid eggs on the kale and collard greens which of course hatch into little green worms. They are now holey. No pun intended. 🙂 Fortunately we don’t mind a few holes and there is enough for us and the moths.

The kale looks different from what you see, much less rough in texture, lighter in color. I like the variety in your garden, including spices, too. 🙂

We grow several varieties of Kale: Siberian, Red Russian, and Lacinato. The tall one you saw was planted last fall and is the Siberian. It is absolutely wonderful.
